Neville's 'blue billion-pound bottle jobs' line began a week of analysis upon analysis but for derby he delivered with a different tone
What on earth would he say this week? City’s cash-rich chokers? Ratcliffe’s rupugnant rotters? Guardiola’s golden boys versus Ten Hag’s total tossers? Gary Neville had been front and centre of the football zeitgeist — just the way he likes it, you would imagine — “It’s been Klopp’s kids against the blue, billion-pound bottle jobs,” Neville warbled in a moment of commentary quickly dubbed “iconic” by a tabloid newspaper and “a bit much” by almost everybody else.
As is pretty much always the case for Manchester United games, he is balanced in the extreme so as not to be accused of pro-United bias. He calls out for faking injury when United are 1-0 up , he immediately states hasn’t been fouled in the lead-up to City’s equaliser and even when United are winning he recognises they are not doing enough to preserve their lead by sitting too deep and not retaining possession .
