Man United suffered a third defeat in their opening five Premier League matches on Saturday, losing 3-1 to Brighton & Hove Albion.
Following a successful first season at Manchester United, featuring a trophy and Champions League qualification, Erik ten Hag would have been within his rights to aim big for his second campaign at the helm.
Following those successes, Ten Hag, who has had his management credentials tested again already this season as a result of Jadon Sancho's social media post earlier this month, would have got away with setting an ambitious target for the 2023/24 campaign, such as rivalling the likes of Arsenal and City in pursuit of the title. Instead, he selected a more realistic and measured approach.
"After that we then have the summer and we have to increase our standards to do even better. The competition is tough and our competitors also reach higher levels, so we have to do at least the same. Granted, it is early days, new signings are continuing to find their feet and a series of injury issues have not helped matters, but United are capable of better. Their 3-1 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday was another stark reminder of just how quickly this team can fold when the going gets tough.
Having won the famous trophy three times, the Reds have a wonderful history in the European Cup. Now the Dutchman has to live up to that legacy.
