A 23-year-old man drowned Saturday night after the canoe he was in overturned on Finger Lake, Alaska State Troopers said.

Devon Betker was paddling to an island with two other men when the canoe capsized in about 20 feet of water, troopers. Two of the men clung to the overturned canoe until another boat stopped and picked them up, troopers said, but Betker slipped beneath the water and the men lost sight of him. Medics, troopers and the Mat-Su Borough Water Rescue Team responded to the area just after 7 p.m., troopers said. Betker’s body was found at about 8:30 p.m.

Betker’s next of kin were at the lake, troopers said. The State Medical Examiner’s Office transported his body to Anchorage.ADVERTISEMENT
