Foden still needs to improve his finishing but the fact that he had taken half of City's shots in the first half - including the goal that put them ahead - pointed to how influential he was in the game. If Gareth Southgate was watching, he may have belatedly seen something.
Aside from John Stones, City haven't really been short of defenders so there isn't really an excuse for them to be so careless even if it is only the early part of the season. Defence remains the cornerstone of success.
