Manchester City haven't finished their transfer business just yet and Cole Palmer looks set to join Chelsea
Manchester City do not intend to replace Cole Palmer and will not stand in the way of James McAtee as they close in on the signing of Matheus Nunes.
Palmer had originally been set for a loan move this summer before the surprise departure of Riyad Mahrez opened up a more prominent position in Pep Guardiola’s squad. However, with the player not certain about committing following the £55m signing of Jeremy Doku, the club received an offer from Chelsea - believed to be around £45m - that they could not refuse.
City are not expected to return to the market to replace Palmer as they instead focus on finalising the £47m purchase of Nunes from Wolves. A breakthrough with the Premier League club came on Wednesday, and Tommy Doyle will head the other way on a season-long loan in a separate deal that also gives Wolves an option to buy at the end of the season for £5m.Palmer’s exit will not block a loan move for McAtee if the young midfielder feels that is the best option for him.
The purchase of Nunes will take City’s summer spending past the £200m mark, although they will have recouped around £150m in sales if the Palmer deal goes through as it is expected to.
