The attack on the 73-year-old is not thought linked to recent incidents in Edgbaston and Ealing.

Sgt Chris Gallon, of the force, said: "This was an appalling attack on a member of the public who was heading home. Extra officers remained at the scene in and around York Road to reassure the public, West Midlands Police said. It confirmed police had been in touch with mosque leaders in the city "to allay any fears and to offer support, particularly with continuing evening prayers over Ramadan".Shirin Housee, who has lived in the area for 26 years, said the attack on the man as he was walking home after the last prayers during the month of Ramadan was "quite scary".
