Neither of the main political parties is in favour of reversing the wave of privatisations which has taken place over the past four decades

Asked for their favoured model of how utilities should be run, 40 per cent said they should be publicly owned and operated in all circumstances, while 22 per cent said they should be usually nationalised but with private-sector involvement on occasion.

Just 8 per cent called for utilities to be run privately at all times with 15 per cent saying privatisation should be the norm with the public sector stepping in under certain circumstances. Asked for their views of a number of specific services, 68 per cent of voters said water should be nationalised with just 9 per cent opposed; 65 per cent backed the nationalisation of the railways; 63 per cent said power networks should be publicly owned; and 60 per cent supported a reversal of the privatisation of Royal Mail.

The most divisive utility was broadband: 39 per cent said internet access should be operated by the Government and 33 per cent disagreed. Although it is Labour that is usually associated with state control of services, a majority of people who voted Tory at the last election are in favour of nationalisation with 57 per cent backing the Government to run utilities and 29 per cent preferring the private sector.
