In one year of the pandemic, Canada lost 40 news outlets and 1,200 permanent jobs in media
The survey, which was conducted by Pollara Strategic Insights for News Media Canada, showed that 90 per cent of respondents agreed local news is important.
This is an issue that Canadians of all political leanings seem to agree upon. The poll found that no matter their age, where they lived, or their federal voting intention, respondents believe in the importance of local news.“Among the supporters of all major political parties you’ve got strong recognition that protecting local media is important,” said Dan Arnold, chief strategy officer at Pollara.
“There is so much fake news out there and I think Canadians have a real thirst for trusted sources of information,” said Deegan. Arnold said this support among Canadians may come down to the belief in fairness and the idea that those creating content should be compensated for their work when it is shared on other sites. He said there is also the sense that Canadians want to see their smaller news outlets succeed rather than get swallowed up by big media companies.
