French President Emmanuel Macron has faced comparisons to communist dictators after he called for social media networks to be “cut off” during the violent riots that have swept across the nation.

Ironically, one of the few national leaders to refrain from criticising the president for his call for censorship was Fabien Roussel, the national secretary of the French Communist Party , who called for similar censorship measures to be imposed in response to the riots.

Attempting to quell the outrage, the government later tried to clarify the remarks from Macron, with Minister of Ecological Transition and Territorial Cohesion Christophe Béchu noting that it was “not the announcement of a censorship law, in any way”. However, it does appear that the government is still intent on pursuing options in terms of social media censorship, with Government spokesman Olivier Véran calling for a “bi-partisan” group of parliamentarians to discuss the matter. He said that the government could look to impose restrictions on geolocation services in social media apps, which he claimed allows rioters to organise and find each other during the chaos.

Perhaps France is fated to remain a state of perpetual revolution and will continue to be bound by the prophecy of French political philosopher Jacques Mallet du Pan who warned in 1793 that “like Saturn, the Revolution devours its children.”
