M Night Shyamalan's Knock at the Cabin is a damp squib The plot-twist king has form for comedic horror, but like so many of his films, the cracks start to show ⭐⭐⭐ ✒️ francescasteele
Is it true? This is the outlandish riddle we – and Eric and Andrew – must solve if we are to reach the end in safety, but there’s not so much a twist in store as an answer. Leonard and three fervent companions with menacingly rudimentary weaponry tie the whole family up before trying to convince them that they’re telling the truth.
They’ve been seeing visions, they say, visions of waves that swallow buildings, the screams of burning children, things crashing from the sky and an unpeopled wasteland in which Andrew, Eric and Wen will be forced to wander alone if they don’t make this impossible decision. No spoilers here as the film really pivots on this point, but let’s just say it’s one of the worst things a family could imagine.
Shayamalan has form for comedic horror and he has fun with the innate implausibility of it all, riffing off the contrast between Bautista’s hulking shape and considerate manner.
