The commissioners acting as the elections board approved the referendum by a 2-1 vote.
WILLIAMSPORT – Voters in Lycoming County will have the opportunity in November to decide whether to keep using an electronic system to tabulate votes.
Efforts to obtain the required number of signatures to get such a question on the ballot are underway in five other counties but it doubtful they will meet Friday’s deadline, said Karen DiSalvo who represents the local group. “Let the people decide” is the reason Commissioner Scott Metzger said he voted to place the question on the ballot.
The commissioner takes issue with his colleagues approving a ballot question about an electronic voting system that is different from what appeared on the petition. Mirabito, a former Democrat state representative, contends there is nothing in the law that gives the commissioners the authority to stop using an electronic voting system.
“It was a good day in Lycoming County,” said Jeffrey Stroehmann, one of those who spearheaded the petition effort. “The commissioners made the right decision. It’s the way government should work.”
