All the details behind 'Six’’s Lucy Moss on attending her first TonyAwards and her joyously subversive Wiederhoeft suit
It’s the morning after the Tonys, but Lucy Moss, 28—the cocreator, with Toby Marlow, 27, of the West End and now Broadway hit musical—sounds remarkably sprightly, given she went to three parties last night. “Look, I am a bit hungover, I’ll admit,” she says, laughing. “But it was all so much fun. I feel uncomplicated about it, really: I’m just very, very happy.”
Then again, Moss has every right to be happy. Winning two out of the eight awards it was nominated for,saw Moss and Marlow pick up the gong for best original score, not only making them the youngest recipients of the award ever but also making Marlow the first openly nonbinary person to win a Tony. “I couldn’t really take it all in yesterday as it was such a whirlwind, but this morning I woke up and was like, ‘That’s so cool!’” Moss says.
Wiederhoeft gives Marlow’s dress the final A-OK, while Moss’s mom, Julie, observes the organized chaos from the background.When Moss first heard the news of her multiple Tony nominations, she was in the middle of a high-pressure tech rehearsal for the latest show she’s directed, a production ofat the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre in London. The first order of the day was, of course, finishing that rehearsal, but thinking about what she and Marlow would wear came a close second.
Usually, she explains, it would be Marlow who might suggest a coordinating look for an invite , but for their big night out, they decided to lean fully into the matchy-matchy spirit. On hand to help was the designer Jackson Wiederhoeft, the Thom Browne alum whose independent label, , has become known for its theatrical, unabashedly queer approach to eveningwear. “We got to have a fitting at theoffice, which was the most glamorous thing,” Moss says. “I was just like, ‘Am I Cara Delevingne now?’”There couldn’t have been a better fit for Marlow and Moss’s sensibility, it turns out, than Wiederhoeft. When the pair decided they wanted to queer the traditional suit-and-dress formula for the red carpet, they worked with Wiederhoeft to scour through his archives for inspiration.
