Alamo initiates annual birthday tribute to Tejano defender who was born and died at the battle site

The new exhibit depicts the cannon platform where the fort's"18-pounder" was famously fired to start a 13-day siege on Feb. 23, 1836.
“It’s time that we follow through and tell all the stories,” said Patricia Mota, a direct descendant of Juan Anselmo Losoya, Toribio’s younger brother. Juan Anselmo Losoya was about 14 when he survived the 13-day siege and battle. Many questions linger about his relationships, political beliefs and reasons for shifting allegiance from Mexico to the cause of Texas independence.Mota said Losoya’s life largely has been overshadowed by Alamo legends and folklore. For at least 20 years, the Alamo celebrated the Aug. 17 birthday of Alamo defender and former Tennessee congressman David Crockett.
“The lots on which these houses stood faced eastward on the road running north into the mission, the road later called Alamo Street,” the report stated.
