Trump gag order hearing: U.S. Judge Tanya S. Chutkan to hear arguments over special counsel’s request to narrowly limit what Trump can say about election case in D.C.
Days after the special counsel’s office sought the “limited” restrictions on former president Donald Trump, his attorneys asked U.S. District Judge Tanya S. Chutkan to recuse herself from his election obstruction case, arguing that two of her statements in sentencing Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol defendants suggested she was biased against him.
But Chutkan denied the request, saying the defense applied a “hypersensitive, cynical, and suspicious” reading to her factual statements and responses to two defendants who argued that they deserved leniency because they were inspired by or less culpable than others who had not been held responsible, such as Trump.
