A 6.8-magnitude earthquake shook Morocco late Friday, officials said. It was felt in the historic city of Marrakesh, Casablanca, Rabat and Fez.
In a statement on Saturday afternoon, King Mohammed VI’s palace proclaimed three days of mourning, though he did not give a public address or request foreign aid to help with the rescue, recovery or rebuilding. Some European governments were waiting for a formal request before sending aid that they were preparing.that this was the first quake of such magnitude to hit the area in more than 100 years.
A representative of Morocco’s National Institute of Geophysics told Moroccan media that this is the first time in a century the institute has recorded this level of seismic activity in Morocco. The main shock was “followed by hundreds of aftershocks,” he added.
