Several activists are currently attempting to trees in the grounds of a block of student flats in Rusholme from being felled

Protesters have tied themselves to several trees in a garden in south Manchester in a bid to stop them being chopped down. Several activists are currently attempting to prevent tree surgeons from felling the trees in the grounds of a block of flats inAround seven or eight firs and copper beech trees are thought to have been removed already, with the protesters trying to stop the loss of around seven others.

Coun Jill Lovecy said the building in Birch Polygon had recently been bought by a new owner. She told thethe council had tried to get an emergency preservation order but had failed as the trees didn't meet the criteria. She said: "There are currently seven young people who have tied themselves to the trees. To me it's now a health and safety issue.

"I'm trying to get the guy to meet with planners. He'll get his development, but we don't need to chop down every tree. "We don't have any powers that can be enforced in this situation, but with global warming we should be trying to protect as many trees as possible."
