Salmon prices are set to jump by up to 10% very soon, according to industry analysts.
"Prices could rise as much as 10% or higher and the worry is that at some point the average shopper says 'I can’t afford this'."It could lead to a surge in salmon imports from Chile - the next biggest provider. Industry data specialist Kantar Worldpanel has measured the latest annual rate of grocery price growth at 17.3% - down from a record 17.5% the previous month.
It showed prices were still rising fastest for products such as eggs, milk and cheese and that shoppers continued to turn to own-brand products, which tend to be cheaper.Kantar's head of retail and consumer insight, Fraser McKevitt, said the slight easing in grocery price inflation will be"welcome news for shoppers", but that"it's too early to call the top".
