Eleven lions have been evacuated from Ukraine via Romania after a major rescue effort involving a number of groups and animal rescuers are settling into their lush new home in South Africa at the end of a 9,000-mile journey across two continents.

The pride, whose daring rescue involved WOW and British animal group Breaking the Chains, was taken to the Wild Animal Sanctuary in Colorado. A team of 13 sedated and loaded the animals into crates for the journey to the temporary home in the city of Targu Mures, central Romania. Simba and Mia were already in the country at their holding point.
