🐄 From machinery theft to livestock raids, Lincolnshire farmers face increasing threats from organised gangs. Stay updated with MyLocal.

Lincolnshire is the rural crime hotspot of the United Kingdom, with figures showing how rural theft cost local farmers some £2.5 million last year.

A Lincolnshire farmer who has been the victim of multiple break-ins in recent years, losing in excess of £20,000 of equipment in the process, fears rural crime in the county is only getting worse. Then, in February 2022, burglars were back at Hannah’s Flowers to steal a host of petrol and diesel powered equipment, totalling around £10,000, as well as a car trailer and a flail for the back of a compact tractor.

“We are constantly on tenterhooks checking the cameras before bed,” she said, “making sure things are secure, taking all the keys home with us. He told the BBC it was frustrating that these kinds of criminal incidents had become “part and parcel of living in rural countryside.”According to insurance firm NFU Mutual’s annual Rural Crime Report, Lincolnshire was the rural crime hotspot in the UK in terms of monetary value – with an estimated £2.5 million of claims going to NFU just last year.

Phil Ingleby, Senior Agent at NFU Mutual Spalding, said: “Highly-organised gangs are causing disruption to farming and widespread concern to people who live and work in the countryside. She adds: “I understand they maybe are underfunded and also understand the connections of these thieves go way deeper than we could ever imagine. It is multi-million pound gangs running them, so in a way what can the police do?

Phil Ingleby added: “Those targeted by criminals may often second guess themselves in the aftermath of an incident, as well as live in fear of repeat attacks on what is not only their workplace, but also their family home. This was bolstered by the installation of 20 new hi-tech night vision hidden cameras placed across the county to help combat crime in those rural areas – following the securing of force funding by the PCC.

“These investments have led to the creation of a new Rural Crime Action Team and additional community police officers to combat crime in towns and villages across the county, a road policing unit to stop criminals gangs coming to our county and a new command and control system to ensure Lincolnshire Police can deploy resources quicker.

“I have high expectations of Lincolnshire Police and will not compromise on my demand that residents get the highest quality of policing.”Thankfully, Hannah’s Flowers has since installed solar-powered security cameras and higher fencing to protect the new shed that has been built, bolstering her hopes of avoiding incidents like this in the future.
