In decades past, the region welcomed refugees from Vietnam, Bhutan, Syria, Bosnia and other war-torn countries. The experience the latest wave of Afghan refugees are going through is a universal one.
Afghan refugees in central Pa.Like most of the nation, the Harrisburg region has in recent decades witnessed wave after wave of immigration.
“We have the same impression,” Phuong said. “We are witnessing the happiness of people who have survived catastrophe. A shipwreck. They are very grateful for being alive but they have lost so much they don’t know if it’s worth it.” One of the biggest obstacles to resettlement this time around is the very thing that has upended everyone’s lives: the pandemic.
“There was not a single family,” he recalls. “The hardest part was personal. My wife was very lonely. No one around us knew Afghan culture.” Still, he said one of the biggest considerations for so many of the refugees is the fact that they want to work but cannot at the moment, whether due to delayed processing, lack of transportation or lack of language skills.
