There is a good, decent man in there somewhere. But Starmer has repressed that old self and now projects a strongman persona. It isn’t working – not for him, his party or voters ✒️y_alibhai for ipaperviews

. He listens to a small group of advisors – some I know to be as committed to ideological cleansing as Mao was in his time. While Great Britain sinks further into a swamp, they purge and punish lifelong Labour supporters – a dishonourable and a disgraceful waste of political capital and time.

Starmer’s personality is not the problem. His priorities and flat language, too often drained of emotion or authenticity, are.

Research shows that three-quarters of people feel pessimistic about the nation’s future. How can it be otherwise? Nothing works. Every class except the top two per cent feels insecure; poverty proliferates; inequality robs people of hope and aspiration; the old, young, idealistic, mentally and physically ill have become collateral damage; manipulative, dishonest and corrupt Tories brazenly disregard the principle of public duty and standards.

This week, Jeremy Hunt said that forgetting to register several rental properties was an “honest mistake”. And Alok Sharma was accused by staff of bullying, allegations he denies. Meanwhile, Rishi Sunak is being investigated by the Parliament’s commissioner for standards for in a childcare agency which is benefitting directly from the latest budget provisions. We watch impotently as they carry on.the Tories this weekend as “a defeated army in vindictive retreat, robbing the museums and cathedrals as they head for the hills; setting fire to, and laying waste to, every institution in their wake; poisoning the rivers and destroying the food supplies… The Conservatives, and their divisive Brexit, burned the soul out of Britain.
