Readers are disappointed in how many people voted for Attorney General Ken Paxton; share thoughts about defending Ukraine; and enjoyed Mark Lamster’s column on the Dallas Convention Center.
Here’s how it works: When a state breaks a rule of international law it effectively commits two delicts, or harms. One is the specific delict. Here, the invasion of Ukraine. But the violating state also commits another delict by traumatizing the underlying rule of nonaggression, which all states have an interest in maintaining.
I agree with Lamster’s skepticism regarding the scope, design and cost of a prospective new convention center. No one can doubt the need to replace what we have. But the exercise to do so has turned into a vanity show by its promoters. The process and current status looks like a Christmas tree adorned with ornaments hung in favor of any and every special interest group that raises its hand.
As a Dallas native, I remember “The Goals for Dallas” in the mid ’60s. City Hall has always been unable find the money to repair or maintain buildings and facilities, but magically comes up with the money for something new.
