Red McCombs brought the Spurs to San Antonio. The move not only changed the city, but one reader says it changed her life.Red McCombs was out of central casting as the quintessential Texan. As a Longhorn, I always admired him for all the love and support he gave University of Texas at Austin, but that was such a small part of this iconic Texan.
I had the pleasure of meeting him once when I was running by his home in Olmos Park. He was just as gracious and witty as you would expect. We talked quite a while, and I let him know how much I appreciated all he had done for UT and San Antonio.I was saddened to hear about the passing of B.J. “Red” McCombs.
McCombs had a passion for supporting students, including UTSA student-athletes. He instilled in me the belief that our athletics program is the front porch to our university. His passion for our Roadrunners catalyzed UTSA’s success as a Division I competitor — success that is generating a great sense of pride for our city.
His legacy extends beyond San Antonio, too. From my position on the board at the University of Texas at Austin’s McCombs School of Business Advisory Council and the McCombs Scholars Program committee, I have seen firsthand the impact McCombs has had on young people across the state. He not only led by example, he made it possible for talented and hardworking kids to carry that example forward as today’s business leaders.
