Plus, our shelter animals are already vaccinated, treated for parasites, spay/neutered, tested for life-threatening diseases, and micro-chipped. Adopt, don’t shop!Why not ban vehicular traffic in and around Alamo Plaza? That way, pedestrians could walk to and from their destinations without any hazard, while horse-drawn carriages would continue to operate as before. For disabled persons, or those unable to walk, golf carts, pedicabs, or trams and trolleys, similar to those used in airport terminals to ferry passengers between gates, would do the job nicely, and at nominal expense to taxpayers and local businesses, respectively.
Why imitate New York, Chicago or other big cities? Let them learn from their own mistakes, as well as to regret them. San Antonio is rightly renowned for its charm. It took three centuries to create the atmosphere that makes it so unique, but only a day to destroy it. Don’t make the Alamo City a dreary place from which gentle equines flee, but one in which our citizens can take pride, and all visitors find refuge.
Life on the streets is misery for the horses. In the summer, they breathe in lung-searing exhaust fumes and plod along scorching asphalt. They constantly must avoid collisions with careless or impatient drivers. Horses don’t enjoy forced labor any more than a person would if made to physically toil all day long. Horses have needs, wants and interests that are entirely independent from what humans demand from them.
