During the 1993-94 school year, my wife and I hosted a foreign exchange student. She was from Denmark. Her name was Ida, and she was 17.
Due to poor communications, things got off to a rocky start. Everyone assumed that Ida possessed good English-speaking skills. We falsely affirmed this belief by noting she was quick to smile and always replied, “Yeah, yeah, yeah.” However, after a few days, we began to feel uncomfortable. When asked to describe her day or to summarize an event, she would always reply, “It was stupid.” Initially, we believed Ida to be one of the rudest, most ungrateful persons we had ever met. Fortunately, after a few weeks, we recognized the root cause of the problem.
Ida’s English skills were poor, and her vocabulary limited. She could not properly express her thoughts. When Ida described something as “stupid,” she was trying to say, “I am struggling to fit in. I miss my family. I would love for everything to return to the way it was.”This story is as relevant today as it was 30 years ago. Our news cycles are filled with the word “woke.” Like Ida, people are attempting to summarize their feelings with a single word: “woke.
Hopefully, time will show its healing properties once again. Life is too short and too precious to spend every day feeling hurt, miserable and unhappy.
