The roots of school vouchers run deep into a cesspool of racism and intolerance. The fruits of that tree, even though now enrobed in flowery words like “choice” and “access,” cannot shed the stink of their roots and Sorensen merely let slip the truth. Now, more than ever, we need institutions that bind us together in common cause. Vouchers are only one front on which the radical right is fighting to demonize social institutions that have long united us. If public schools are failing in their task, then let’s fix them, not walk away.
