Letter: Latter-day Saints 'have always been the majority here in Utah and have used, and continue to use, this fact to codify their dogma into state, county and city laws.'
That said, I believe much of the negative sentiment we are seeing is a direct result of many decades of actions from the LDS Church itself. They have always been the majority here in Utah and have used, and continue to use, this fact to codify their dogma into state, county and city laws. The most obvious example is regulation of alcoholic beverages. Utah laws have long been a laughing stock among non-LDS residents and tourists.
Currently the most egregious example of the LDS Church’s inappropriate meddling in state law is the recent gerrymandering of the congressional districts that denied Democrats any chance of winning a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives by carving Salt Lake County like a pie and serving pieces to districts one, two, and three.Work to resolve the already mentioned issues would likely improve public perceptions of the church.
I for one would gain a much more positive opinion of the church, which is attended by so many of my friends, family, and neighbors!
