damage already done. I’d hoped with all my heart that such an approach was viable and correct, however, my brain — along with the brains of a growing corps of climate scientists — concludes that it’s wrong. Dead wrong.
The title of that story is accurate in that the Earth isn’t dying. This planet will survive. It’s less certain, however, that that will include a habitable climate for humans. With each passing second of inaction, the self-inflicted extinction of our species and most others becomes the more likely future.
What’s been nature’s response? It put in motion several self-reinforcing, warming, feedback loops — natural processes that build on themselves and can’t be stopped — stronger storms, record high temperatures, flooding, droughts with attendant wildfires, and unprecedented releases of methane from formerly frozen tundra and seabed are all increasing.
What can humans do to reverse such trends? We can at best slow them using the methods the Associated Press story lists, but we lost the ability to halt them decades ago. So, let’s get off “hopium,” the positivity drug that blinds humans from seeing the writing on the wall. We can mentally accept a world that will continue to change for the worse and accept our own species’ extinction in the relatively near future as something almost all of history’s species have experienced.
