Some dogs that seem friendly at bedtime will not like the idea of a stranger creeping around in the kitchen at 5:30 a.m. looking for the coffeepot.Here's another rule I established: Before going to bed, find out how the locks on the doors work.
You ought to ask, also, about peculiar noises that the house might have. Almost all homes have mysterious sounds. The owners will not be disturbed by them but a guest will. Not just at night. I heard it a minute ago. It seemed to come from one of the bedrooms and sounded like someone rapping on the wall with a knuckle. I heard it several times during the night. The owner does not hear it.
I put this rule at the top of my list after I got lost in a house in pitch dark. I went to the kitchen for some water, and I couldn't find my way back to my room.
