Sir Lenny Henry has said carrying the Queen’s Baton on the final leg of its 294-day journey to the Commonwealth Games fills him with ‘massive pride’.

2022 Queen’s Baton as part of its 90,000-mile journey around all 72 nations and territories of the Commonwealth.the day before the opening ceremony‘The chance to carry the Queen’s Baton on the final leg of its journey fills me with massive pride, especially when I think of how far it’s travelled over the past nine months,’ Sir Lenny said.

‘It has crossed land, sea and air to cover every corner of the Commonwealth, including my parent’s home of Jamaica, and all the way to Birmingham City Centre ; and carried all the way by inspirational individuals whose stories have blown me away.’The actor and comic will carry the Queen’s Baton through Victoria Square in Birmingham on Wednesday

Athletes will compete in Birmingham for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, the UK largest sporting event since the London 2012 Olympics in Glastonbury Festival’s audience, was invited to be a baton bearer to celebrate Sport Relief being an official charity partner of the Birmingham Games. Sport Relief was initially a charity event and telethon, established in 2002, held once every two years as a spin-off from Comic Relief, which was founded by Sir Lenny and screenwriter Richard Curtis in 1985 in response to the famine in Ethiopia.

In 2022 it was announced that the alternating Red Nose Day campaign would become annual as Sport Relief evolved into a year-round brand.The Prince of Wales will deliver a speech during the athletics event opening ceremony at the Alexander Stadium, during which he will read the Queen’s message for the Commonwealth Games.the event on Friday, which she previously attended with her late husband Prince Philip.
