Lego’s new Braille Bricks offer a new way to read for adults with diminishing vision that doesn’t require technology, exposing them to the growth potential of their changing landscape. So what if they were designed for kids.

The announcement earlier this week that Danish toy giant Lego Group will begin making bricks that feature both Braille and raised letters has been justly received with enormous enthusiasm by mainstream education professionals and advocates for the visually impaired. It is widely seen as a boost for Braille literacy, which has fallen significantly in recent decades to around just 10% of blind and low-vision children.

It does seem like a no-brainer to incorporate Braille cells, comprised of different dot configurations among the two parallel vertical lines of three dots each, alongside standard raised letters matching the Braille letter displayed. It’s a great way to help blind and low-vision children learn an alphabet that will allow them to read and write – and spell – alongside their sighted peers.

This opportunity is right before our aging, myopic, cataract-ridden and macular-degenerating eyes: Lego Braille Bricks would be excellent tools for the vast and growing population of seniors experiencing declining vision in their so-called declining years. Remember, some 10,000 adults are turning 65 each day between now and the year 2030.
