Leeds Bradford Airport bosses blame “excessive delays” and the decision to hold a public inquiry.
Under the plans, existing buildings at Leeds Bradford Airport would have been demolished and a new terminal builtAirport bosses said they had withdrawn proposals because of "excessive delays" and theThey said they would now turn their attention to extending the existing terminal, plans for which were approved by Leeds City Council in 2019.The latest expansion plan for the airport caused controversy since it was first outlined in 2020.
However, Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove made the decision to "call in" the latest proposals earlier this year, meaningProtesters against the plans included climate scientists, residents' groups, and medical professionals. The airport said investment in the project had so far reached £4.2m and it was not prepared to "commit a further uncapped sum over an indefinite timeframe into a public inquiry process when their focus needs to be on modernising the airport for the future".
"We think the overall game plan of the airport is to still try and expand its passenger numbers to seven million and all they've done is to say well we can do that with the existing terminal, possibly enhanced a bit," he said.
