Washington's family attorney Robert Fakhouri said an attempt to resolve the lawsuit was issued Wednesday giving the city the option to settle the case for $2.1 million.
Almost two years after a Chicago police squad car rolled over Astarte Washington’s body, her family’s lawsuit against the city is still looming while the city was handed the option to settle the case for $2.1 million this week.
Several Chicago police officers were in the area trying to control the crowd, and Washington heard officers ordering protesters to “stop and get to the ground,” the lawsuit said. The crowd began to disperse, and Washington, following the officers’ orders, got on the ground. Fakhouri said the officer who was driving the squad car and failed to leave it in park when he exited the vehicle is Christopher Holmes. Fakhouri said Holmes was “definitely not put on leave” after the accident, which would have been the case had there been an investigation at the time.
The report said Washington was injured by the squad car after “running from the east side of the street to the west side of the street with a group of looters.”
