Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler's future has become bleaker because of the latest update on the Law & Order franchise's return this fall.

The Law & Order franchise gets a disappointing update about Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler's future. Since Chris Meloni's return to the Dick Wolf-produced franchise via Law & Order: Organized Crime, there has been eager anticipation about the possible reunion between Benson and Stabler. Several years after their first entanglement in a decade, there's still no concrete path forward for their romance.

Now, a report from Variety reveals that NBC is breaking up the Law & Order Thursday block by moving Law & Order: Organized Crime to a midseason premiere. This means there won't be as many crossover opportunities between the new spin-off and Law & Order: SVU. Read the related excerpt from the outlet below:

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT "Meanwhile, the decision not to keep a three-prong “Law & Order” lineup on Thursdays comes out of the showrunner change on “Law & Order: Organized Crime.” “They will actually benefit from having a little time and the show will come back as part of the Thursday night stack in midseason. This opened up the opportunity to put ‘Found’ in a great time period,” Bader said.

Regardless of what happens to the pair in the upcoming Law & Order franchise season finale, this means that it will be a while before it gets an actual resolution. Considering the limited screen time, it's unlikely that the NBC franchise can come up with a satisfying resolution with regard to the complicated dynamic. This means that instead of tackling its fallout this September, the answers may not come until the midseason.

At this point, it's uncertain what NBC and Wolf Entertainment's long-term plan for Stabler and Benson is. However, considering how long this dynamic has been going on in the Law & Order franchise, it's best that they finally decide what their endgame is for them. This is much better than stringing the viewers for more years because they risk turning them off entirely.
