A prominent ally of Donald Trump is pressing Nebraska officials to change the way the state awards electoral votes. Nebraska is one of two states that does not have a winner-take-all policy, where the winner of the statewide vote receives all the state’s electoral votes. Nebraska’s electoral votes are instead split among the statewide and congressional district winners, including a swing district in the Omaha area that President Biden carried in 2020 as Trump easily won statewide.
But its chances of becoming law appear unlikely at this point in the state’s legislative session, which ends April 18. There has been no signal yet from Republican leadership that they intend to take up the bill, despite the endorsement of the Republican secretary of state, Bob Evnen, said Gavin Geis, the executive director of Common Cause Nebraska. Bills typically need three scheduled votes to pass the state’s unicameral legislature.
