The clearance rate for homicides in LAPD’s Valley Bureau was higher than any other, but less than in previous years.
Los Angeles Police Department detectives solved more homicides in the city last year than in either of the two previous years, officials said Monday, March 28, with the department appearing to bounce back from a significant drop in solved killings in the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic.
LAPD Chief Michel Moore credited at least part of that turnaround due to life simply returning to normal: With fewer people sheltering at home and more public services coming back online, everyday residents had greater opportunities to come forward with information that might help solve crimes.“So did participation ,” the chief said. “As we come out of the pandemic, we’re seeing the social fabric coming back together.
The department has struggled to keep its staffing levels up after several waves of retirements and resignations. That has hit its specialized units hardest — officials said Monday homicide detectives generally represent the department’s most senior officers, with decades of experience under their belts.
The unit’s clearance appeared to dip as a result. At the same time homicides there increased: While killings fell or remained constant in every other bureau, homicides jumped by 14% in the Valley Bureau in 2022. The total there increased to 67 from the previous year, when there were 59 killings.
