Nowhere in Lancashire is as densely populated as this Blackburn neighbourhood
The most densely populated part of Lancashire is as packed as a football pitch with seven teams playing on it at the same time. Census data shows that more people live in Bastwell in Blackburn with Darwen per square kilometre than anywhere else in Lancashire.
In that neighbourhood, the equivalent of 10,366 people live together on each sqkm of land. That is the same as 74 people living cheek-by-jowl on a patch of land the same size as a football pitch, enough to line-up in six 11-a-side teams and one with eight players. At the other end of the spectrum, only 23 people live on each sqkm of land in Kellet & Lune Valley, in Lancaster. That is the equivalent of one person living alone on a patch of land the same size as six football pitches.
The affluent neighbourhood of Maida Hill in Westminster is the most crowded in England and Wales. In that area - which is named after a former pub honouring the British victory at the Battle of Maida in Italy during the Napoleonic Wars - the equivalent of 23,873 people live together on each sqkm of land.That makes 170 people for each football pitch-sized patch of land - the same as 15 football teams playing at the same time.
Meanwhile, only five people live on each sqkm of land in rural Bellingham, Otterburn & Redesdale, in the North East, within the Northumberland National Park. That is the equivalent of one person living alone on a patch of land the same size as 26 football pitches.
