A prestigious East Lancashire football tournament has celebrated its 90th year this year, raising thousands of pounds for a local charity.
The Orphanage Cup took place for the first time in 1952, bringing together amateur football teams from local companies across Lancashire. Back then, it was raising money for Blackburn Orphanage which now operates under the name of Child Action North West.
Jonathan Cobbold is the Strategic Director of Business Development, Innovation and Growth at Child Action North West. He spoke to LancsLive about the tournament and said: "The Orphanage Cup is 90 years old, but some do say it actually started earlier than that. The tournament has faced low numbers in recent years and for the first time in its 90-year history, the Orphanage Cup did not take place in 2020 due to Covid restrictions. Despite this, by using clever marketing techniques, the Cup was revitalized and this year, alongside its birthday, 40 teams took place including a local fire service, a large marketing company in Manchester and the winners, Accrington Stanley Community Trust.
This year's final also saw the first time in the Cup's history that a children's tournament was also held. The inaugural Junior Orphanage Cup saw 15 local Under Seven sides taking part, with winners Wilpshire Wanderers taking home the trophy.
