Labour’s attack ads on the Conservatives may be dirty - but they’re working 🖋️ wallaceme for ipaperviews

is a compelling issue for a wide spectrum of voters, particularly among those that Labour lost in 2019. The Opposition has historically lagged behind the Tories here, and it seems they still fear it’s a weak spot, hence the decision to come out swinging.

The bitterly personal nature of these ads is also revealing. While Labour strategists can take great heart from the headline poll numbers, and from significant leads in party vs party questions on key issues, the numbers are less positive when it comes to a presidential campaign between Starmer and Sunak as leaders.

The Opposition Leader has not only allowed this campaign to take place, he has publicly promoted it. He “stands by every word”. Which is fair enough, given that it is quite an effective attack.
