The Rutherglen and Hamilton West seat was held by Margaret Ferrier, who was forced out after breaking Covid rules.
The first votes are now being counted in the Banqueting Hall at South Lanarkshire’s offices in Hamilton. A hush had descended as the local authority’s “information officer” delivered the counting procedures before the count officially begins.
Party politicians and officials are keeping up appearances, even if some suspect it is unlikely to be their night. Council officials are also having to cope with a considerably bigger media presence than usual – with interest from across the UK in what is considered a bellwether of voting intentions ahead of the next general election.
