Kroger opened a delivery facility in mid-2022 in San Antonio as part of an effort to build its base of customers in cities where it does not have stores.
Less than two years after rolling out delivery services in San Antonio, Kroger is leaving town again. The Cincinnati-based company said it is closing its 70,000-square-foot facility near Interstate 35 and Loop 410 on May 25 along with similar operations in Austin and the Miami, Fla., area — hubs it opened as part of its effort to build an online grocery delivery business in areas where it doesn't have physical stores.
Sales and numbers of customers were rising each week,, they said, while declining to discuss specifics. But Kroger executives began tapping the brakes on expansion last fall. During a September earnings call with analysts, Kroger Chairman and CEO Rodney McMullen said the company was “making progress” but had to “make sure that we have a clear path on the ones we have” before opening more fulfillment and spoke facilities.
