A Christian knight confronts life's temptations in Albrecht Dürer's 1513 engraving, considered by many to be the pinnacle of printmaking
A self-portrait of Dürer from 1498 is housed at the Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain.Albrecht Dürer painted 13 self-portraits over the course of his life, the first when he was in his early teens. One of the most famous was painted in 1498 when he was 26. By depicting himself in rich attire and kidskin gloves, he announces that he is not merely a craftsman but a great artist—a role that merited the elevated status he enjoyed on his visits to Italy.
In “Knight, Death, and the Devil,” Dürer combines his German heritage with the Italian focus on classical form, perspective, and proportion. The work depicts a steadfast knight on horseback accompanied by his faithful dog. Considered one of the most technically brilliant and expressive pieces of printmaking, this copperplate engraving was produced by the Nürnberg artist Albrecht Dürer in 1513.
