While you can be certain Gabriel Landeskog wants to get back on the ice alongside Colorado teammates with all his heart and soul, there are 56 million reasons why the Avs should not risk the long-term health of their captain in pursuit of a championship that now feels like a long shot.
Don’t do it, Gabe. You gritted teeth and battled on without complaint to win a championship nearly nine months ago. And that injured knee has been barking at you ever since.But with six seasons remaining on a $56 million contract, it would be nuts for Landeskog to come back one shift before his long-ailing knee is 100%, and a return to full health allows him to be the Captain Gabe unafraid to set up shop in the heat of a goalie’s kitchen or throw a fist at a foe itching for trouble.
After beating around the bush while hoping for the best since Landeskog underwent surgery on the eve of this season, his originally projected recovery time of 12 weeks now dragging on for months, Bednar came clean and acknowledged there’s doubt Landy will be able to contribute to the team’s championship defense.
Maybe the uncertainty created by Landeskog’s iffy status helps explain why the Avalanche made no truly significant moves at the trade deadline. After going all-in a year ago to win the Cup, it would’ve been a risky gamble to double-down and sacrifice more future assets in pursuit of back-to-back championships without absolute confidence in Landy’s return.
