Kirk said a shocking thing in Star Trek VI, but without that controversial line, the Captain couldn't have risen above his hatred of the Klingons.

The darkest line uttered by Captain James T. Kirk set up the character's final, and greatest Star Trek lesson. In Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, Kirk and the crew of the USS Enterprise-A were tasked with hosting Klingon Chancellor Gorkon and delivering him to important peace talks back on Earth. When Gorkon was assassinated, Kirk and Doctor Leonard McCoy were framed for the political assassination, with Kirk's hatred of the Klingons being cited as his motive.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Released in 1991, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country brought the Star Trek: The Original Series era to an ending that tapped into the geopolitical situation following the end of the Cold War. The conflict between Starfleet and the Klingon Empire was always an analog for the real-world conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union.

However, as always, the coldly logical Vulcan is actually looking out for his best friend by volunteering the clearly prejudiced and grieving Kirk for such a hugely important diplomatic mission involving the Klingon Empire. Spock was giving Kirk a chance to see beyond his prejudice and move past his bitterness and anger over David's death.

Kirk's Final Star Trek TOS Movie Lesson Was His Greatest One of the best scenes in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country is the dinner in which General Chang tries to goad Kirk into accepting that he too is an old warrior. All the while Spock tries to assert that Kirk believes in peace, while Lieutenant Uhura attempts to converse with Gorkon about Shakespeare.

Meanwhile, Gorkon's appreciation of the classics, and Kirk's refusal to dispute Spock's observation hint that there is a way forward for both the Federation and the Klingons. In unmasking the vast conspiracy to derail the peace talks, Kirk is able to prove that he no longer blames all Klingons for the tragic death of David.
