President Joe Biden gave a celebratory speech Friday about the U.S. Senate’s historic vote to make Ketanji Brown Jackson the first Black woman on the Supreme Court, with the justice in waiting and Vice President Kamala Harris also delivering remarks. The president reiterated his view that the country is all about “possibilities.”

Jackson, 51, won’t serve on the Supreme Court until later this year, as Breyer, 83, has said he’s aiming to retire at the end of the court’s term, in late June or early July. “The notes that I’ve received from children are particularly cute and especially meaningful, because more than anything, they speak directly to the hope and promise of America,” she said. “It has taken 232 years and 115 prior appointments for a Black woman to be selected to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States. But we’ve made it.”

“We have come a long way toward perfecting our union. In my family, it took just one generation to go from segregation to the Supreme Court of the United States. And it is an honor, the honor of a lifetime, for me to have this chance to join the court.”Harris, the first woman, first Black person and first South Asian American to be elected U.S.
