“The things that I’ll remember when I die won’t necessarily be, Oh, that was a hit, and everyone thought I was amazing”: Thanks to ‘The Banshees of Inisherin,’ Kerry Condon’s big moment has finally arrived.

These kinds of setbacks had already become somewhat familiar. “There were so many close calls in my career,” she says now. “They made me not really feel like I needed recognition—that I wasn’t really in it for other people to think I was good, but just to prove things to myself.” After the series ended, Condon adopted a horse from theproduction. It’s among her most treasured possessions.

This is the sort of wisdom one picks up after decades in the business, learning to love the craft of acting while realizing, maybe, that there’s not a ton of glory in it. It also reflects the extraordinary humanity that Condon brings to what finally appears to be her breakout screen role.

This was somewhat by design. The now 39-year-old Condon has known McDonagh since she was 17 years old, when he cast her in his playfor the Royal Shakespeare Company. She’s been in his world ever since, both onstage and onscreen, from juicy theater roles to a bit part in the film“I don’t think I’d quite seen how brilliant she was onstage really captured in the movies,” McDonagh tells me. “So I wanted to make sure that we did that this time.

He has. I’m sitting with Condon in the kind of airless Toronto conference room, lined with empty coffee cups and half-eaten croissants, that this festival is made of—big stars making the rounds from studio to studio, event to event, with teams of handlers behind them. It’s a launching point, a grand kickoff. And it’s new for Condon: “After the 24 years I’ve been an actress, it’s like, yeah, I feel grateful,” she says.

She did feel the pressure—to make it great, to live up to her filmmaker’s standard. She and Farrell built an entire, elaborate, unspoken backstory for their characters—specifically, the root of their close bond, the tragic nature of their parents’ deaths—and ran their lines three times every morning before filming, at Condon’s request. It helped that she’d known Farrell, too, since she was 17; they collaborated here thoroughly and intensively. “It just felt very safe.
