Ken Paxton finally caught up in the guardrails of democracy | Opinion
A request by Paxton for $3.3 million in public funds to settle that lawsuit precipitated this moment of reckoning in the Legislature. The trial in the Senate this summer will be an opportunity for Texans to review in detail the accusations now outlined in 20 articles of impeachment — accusations that include bribery, obstruction of justice and abuse of public trust, among other charges.
It’s worth highlighting that 121 representatives — a solid majority of the House that included 60 of 85 Republicans – voted to impeach Paxton, despite alleged threats from Paxton himself. Some of those Republicans may indeed face political reprisal in their next election, but they should stand tall for setting aside partisanship and voting with their conscience.
