Gov. Brian Kemp (R-GA) said Thursday that there will be no special session of the Georgia State legislature to impeach Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, claiming attempting to do so could be unconstitutional.
Kemp said that despite his own feelings on Willis's investigation into former President Donald Trump and his allies over allegedly working to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, he does not have the power to call a special session.
The governor noted that he has not seen any evidence that warrants action by the prosecuting attorneys oversight commission, and said calling a special session to impeach Willis would be"unfeasible" and could even be"unconstitutional. “As long as I am governor, we’re going to follow the law and the Constitution, regardless of who it helps or harms politically,” Kemp said.
Kemp's comments put the matter of impeaching Willis to rest after she indicted Trump and his allies earlier this month. A total of 19 people have been arrested on RICO charges.The House Judiciary Committee launched its own investigation into Willis last week. Rep. Jim Jordan told Willis in a letter that her “indictment and prosecution implicate substantial federal interests, and the circumstances surrounding your actions raise serious concerns about whether they are politically motivated.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene announced the congressional investigation while showing her support for Trump outside the Fulton County Jail last Thursday.
