Labour leader grilled on a host of subjects by local students at Liverpool ECHO offices
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer today said the potential for Liverpool is "huge" as he promised to share power and opportunities around the country.
"If you think about the innovation, the potential of places like Liverpool, it is huge. If you had a government that matched the ambition of the people here, then you would be really motoring. That's what I mean by levelling up. Not the government deciding what's good for you, that's a very disrespectful way of doing politics."
"They've got a big pot of money in London and they are sitting there saying you tell us if you want a bit of money and we will decide whether we will give it to you for this project or that project, rather than being brave enough to say let's release this to people in their place to make decisions about their place. I don't think it is a weak thing to release power to be closer to where people are, I actually think it's a bold thing to do and we should do it.
On the RAAC crisis, the Labour leader urged Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to "correct the record" after he accused Sir Keir of not mentioning the issues until the developed recently. "In 2021 when the Prime Minister was then Chancellor, there was a programme for school maintenance, where it was suggested at one point that 300 schools needed maintenance because of this problem, that was cut down to 100 and then he said he was only doing 50 and of those they have only rebuilt and maintained four of them. Massive failure by the government and yet another example of under investment, not taking key decisions and now we are where we are.
