But many Labour supporters are not happy – and the party’s leader will need to choose his words carefully‘It is not surprising that Sir Keir’s handling of the conflict between Israel and Hamas has not been particularly well received’

We perhaps should not be surprised. The long-running dispute arouses strong emotions among those inclined to sympathise with one side or the other, emotions that are laced with arguments about alleged historical rights and wrongs and are stirred by concerns about the security and welfare of Israeli and Palestinian citizens. Such emotions can matter more than the prospect of election victory.

Meanwhile, Ipsos reports that 19 per cent of Labour supporters feel the UK should support the Palestinians, while only seven per cent believe it should support Israel. Support for the Palestinian side of the argument is particularly prevalent among Britain’s ethnic minority communities, thereby putting pressure on those many Labour MPs who represent constituencies with relatively large minority populations.to the outlook among Conservatives. As many as 36 per cent sympathise more with the Israeli side, while just six per cent say they feel closer to the Palestinians.

Against this backdrop it is not surprising that Sir Keir’s handling of the conflict between Israel and Hamas has not been particularly well received by Labour supporters.
